History
Musée du Séminaire, 1950
Musée de la nature
et des sciences,2002

The history of the Musée de la nature et des sciences, now spanning more than a century, always evokes a sense of pride within me.

It was in 1879, in the heart of a revered Sherbrooke institution, the Séminaire de Sherbrooke, that the Musée du Séminaire de Sherbrooke was created.  At the time the priests from the seminary devoted much of their energy and heart to set up the Museum of which the mission to create an awareness of the natural sciences is still perpetuated today, and this tradition continues in a spirit of respect and conservation of our natural heritage.

In the fall of 2002, the Musée du Séminaire began a major transformation process when it became the Musée de la nature et des sciences. Well ensconced in part of the Julius-Kayser building, a structure measuring some 5000 square metres that was once home to a company that specialized in the manufacture of fine silk clothing, the Museum today offers a new vocation within its historically rich walls.

The corporation of the Musée de la nature et des sciences now has the mission to create awareness among the general public about the principle of sustainable development.

To achieve its mission, the Museum shares its scientific knowledge with all age groups through its varied, entertaining and accessible programming, while at all times conserving and enriching its natural heritage collections.

As well, thanks to the Centre de production scientifique (CPS), the Museum’s scientific production centre, it now develops museology products and stimulating and forward-looking communications methods; the products and expertise of the CPS are offered to other cultural, heritage and scientific organizations.

A history such as this, replete with success and passion by all who associate  with it, cannot help but enhance the pride and desire to visit the  Musée de la nature et des sciences
